Evolution – The Islamic Perspective

In recent years, the creationism versus evolution controversy has received much attention. Christian fundamentalists have denied the validity of the theory of evolution, attempted to change school syllabi, and even taken the debate to civil courts. Atheists, in their own way, have used the theory to discredit Christianity and other religions. This controversy appears to be a classic case of conflict between science and religion.

The Promised Messiah (‘alayhi al-salam), the founder of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, however, always maintained that there is never a conflict between the Act of God and the Word of God. In other words, nature, and Islam’s Holy Scripture, the Qur’an, do not contradict each other. If they both come from the same God there can’t be any conflict. Any apparent conflict arises because of the misunderstanding of scripture or nature. So what is the source of misunderstanding in this controversy? First, let us see what the two points of view are.

Creationism refers to the view that God created the universe out of nothing and then placed on earth different species of plants, animals and human beings. There is, of course, a wide range of opinions among creationists as to how this happened and the time scales involved. However, the central idea is the same, which is that a super natural being has brought into existence all life on earth through super natural processes.

Evolution, on the other hand, is the theory stating that the diverse life forms we see around us have all emerged as a result of natural processes. It asserts that complex organisms like human beings and other animals have evolved from simpler organisms through small modifications over a long period of time. Evolution, a scientific theory first expressed by Charles Darwin in 1859, is considered to be on par with Newton’s laws of motions, Einstein’s theory of relativity and quantum mechanics.

This lecture will provide the Islamic perspective on the theory of evolution as explained by the Holy Qur’an and expounded by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community.

Allah – The Ever Living – Part of our New Existence of God Series

‘God.’

No other word has quite as much power, majesty, fear, love, hope or controversy attached to it. The question of His existence needs little introduction- it is a question that is asked by the heart and mind of every human being, from whichever walk of life they may hail. It’s importance is paramount, since the existence of a Creator, if decided upon, throws one’s mind into a storm of further questions- what was the purpose of God creating us?; how did He create us?; should I care if He is there?; what happens if I don’t?, and so forth. It is a question that every responsible individual must deliberate upon, for the consequences of God’s existence are too immense to ignore out of apathy. Deciding that God exists on a purely rational basis is the first step for many in the journey towards God. As will be explored at the end of this piece, it is certainly not sufficient for true belief in God- however for many of this age the mind must be satisfied before the heart will even incline towards anything less cerebral and more spiritual- and it is that first step which this short piece seeks to help bridge. The aim therefore will be to explain why God must exist, with reference to Islamic sources, whilst also addressing common objections such as the multiverse theory, and the question of what came before God. Who is Allah?

It is a false notion that in these times He does hear but does not speak. But He hears and speaks, too. All His Attributes are eternal and everlasting. None of His Attributes is in abeyance, nor will it ever be. He is the One without any associate Who has no son, nor has He any wife. He alone is the peerless Who has no one like Him. And He is the One Who is unique in that none of His Attributes are exclusively possessed by anyone besides Him. He is the One Who has no equal. The Meaning of ‘Nothing’

ImageThe following is an excellent book review of “The Universe From Nothing,” by Lawrence Krauss. It is often alleged that the origin of the universe has now been explained by science, with the vacuum states described by models of quantum physics removing the need for an external cause, ie. God. Design, or the Illusion of Design?

In his piece, “Our Universe. Order or Chaos?” T. Nasser has already argued against the claim made by Victor J. Stenger in “God: The Failed Hypothesis” that the universe only exhibits pockets of complexity, by pointing out that the uniformity found in the universe indicates design. Our universe. Order or chaos?

In 2007 Victor J. Stenger, an Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Hawaii and former particle physics researcher published the book ‘God: The Failed Hypothesis’. Not only did this book prove to be a hit with other scientific atheists such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens, but it quickly jumped into the list of New York Times’ bestsellers, proving successful with the public also.

The stated premise of the book is supposedly the rational, scientific (and therefore surely impartial?) analysis of the hypothesis of the existence of a higher power (i.e. God), by examining the information available. The title of the book somewhat gives away the conclusion. Stenger believes that a rational analysis of the universe leaves a person no choice other than atheism.

Science and Religion: A shared wonder

In a recent article in the Guardian, Jeff Forshaw a particle physicist, writes that “Science and Religion are united in a shared sense of wonder” about the universe. It is a interesting read, where Forshaw expounds on the danger of not acknowledging the limits of science.

“By overstating science’s power and not acknowledging its limitations, we risk fostering the growth of a religion-substitute, with the scientists as high priests. Such hubris not only irritates people, but more significantly it risks promoting the misconception that science deals with certainty – and that is the very antithesis of good science.”

He explains how science and religion answer a different set of questions. Science is not concerned with the meaning of life. If the universe has any point to it or not, it doesn’t matter from a scientist perspective. Irrespective, of their viewpoints, science and religion are united on one point, that our existence, and nature in general “inspires glory and wonder”.
